A group of children smiling

If you’ve noticed your child’s teeth coming in a little crooked—or they’re having trouble chewing or speaking—you might be wondering: “Is it too soon for braces?”

At Dr. Romick Orthodontics, we often hear this question from concerned parents. The short answer? It might not be too soon at all, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your child will need braces right away. In fact, early evaluations are one of the best ways to ensure your child’s smile develops in the healthiest way possible.

Here’s what every parent in Cincinnati should know about the right time to consider orthodontic care.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation by age 7. This may seem early, but by this age, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth—making it easier for an orthodontist to spot potential issues with jaw growth, bite alignment, and tooth positioning.

An early evaluation doesn’t always mean treatment is needed right away. In fact, many children won’t require braces until later in their teen years. But an early check-up allows us to:

  • Monitor your child’s growth and development
  • Identify any red flags early on
  • Plan the most effective timing for future treatment

Signs Your Child May Need Early Orthodontic Attention

Every child is different, but there are a few signs that may suggest the need for an orthodontic evaluation:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Crowded, crooked, or spaced-out teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb sucking past age 4–5
  • Jaws that shift or make noise
  • Speech challenges

Even if none of these are present, it’s still a good idea to have your child’s bite checked around age 7. Some orthodontic issues can go unnoticed without a professional evaluation.

What Is Early (Phase I) Treatment?

In some cases, early orthodontic treatment—also called Phase I treatment—may be recommended between the ages of 7–10. This doesn’t mean full braces just yet. Early treatment often involves simple appliances or partial braces that help guide jaw growth, make room for incoming teeth, and correct harmful habits.

Early intervention can help prevent more serious problems later and can often reduce the complexity or length of future orthodontic treatment.
